Hello there. I arrived here starting with reading sv_libertarian's blog on Olyblog.net, and followed the links from there. I'm an immigrant, originally from Holland, but I came over five years ago, got naturalized last September, and I've taken so much to the Northwest that I don't think I'll ever want to live anywhere else.

Let me come out of closet politically right now: I am, for all intents and purposes, a liberal. That is to say, I'm socially liberal, I support some measure of government intervention in economic and environmental matters, and I used to be a gun control advocate. That last one is, however, no longer the case. The watershed, I think, was the verdict in Castle Rock, CO v Gonzales; the fact that Castle Rock PD was in no way censured for sitting on their hands while three kidnapped girls were murdered was a shock to me, and that was when I decided that a government that refuses to take any responsibility for the safety of its citizens has no right to deny them the means to protect themselves. Then my wife and I had our first kid, and the protective instinct really kicked in. I applied for a CPL the day after I was naturalized.

I don't know that open carry is something I'd want to do myself, but I fully support the right of those who do want it to do it.

Aside from that, I'm a stay-at-home dad, part-time student, I occasionally do theatrical stuff (right now I'm stage-managing a musical in Burien) and I volunteer as a tour guide at Wolf Haven in Tenino.

Welcome to the board. Hopefully you can bring some insight to the boards from the college standpoint, like in your other post. Also Welcome to Washington. It is a very nice and relaxing place to live.

Welcome, I hadn't realized I was actually doing some good on Olyblog!   Grin  Have you checked out the OpenCarry.org forums yet?
Disregard a message I left you elsewhere on the board I hadn't gotten around to reading this.  If you want to meet up for coffee sometime, I'd like to meet you.

Do you own or carry a weapon at all?  I know OC isn't for everyone.

Glad you like it here and welcome to the US!  Sometimes I take for granted being born here, and having family going back to before the revolution.  Anyway glad you made it over the ocean and over to here!  BTW, what is your handle on Olyblog?  PM me it if you like.  Thanks!

Steve

Like I said in the other thread, I'm "Jurjen S." on OlyBlog.

I own an M&P40, though I'm keeping it in my brother-in-law's gunsafe (he lives in Kirkland) at present, until my wife can find some time to get herself familiarized with it. She doesn't want any weapons in the house unless she understands how to operate (and especially clear) them, and I wouldn't want it any other way. I want her to be able to use the thing should the need arise while I'm out of the house. I hope she gets enthused enough that, in due course, she'll want her own gun, but I'm not prepared to press the issue at present. It does help that she made friends (via an online low-carb dieting support forum, of all things) with a couple who are both avid handgunners. Plus, her brother (the one in Kirkland) has always been on the lookout for her safety, and he's extended a standing offer to help her out with acquiring a firearm and training anytime she decides she's ready. I shoud note she's actually the one who pointed me to your blog on Olyblogs, though.

I learned to handle firearms as a draftee in the Royal Netherlands Army (oooh, fourteen years ago by now), and I'm familiar with the Browning High Power, Glock 17, Uzi, FN FAL and FN MAG, and I've thoroughly familiarized myself with the theory of "rules of engagement" for an armed civilian in Washington state, but I could probably do with some training myself.

I have set myself up to be able to CC (roomy pants, gun belt, IWB holster, mag carrier). The way I figure it, I bought the gun primarily to be able to protect my kid, and that means that when we leave the house, I should have the option to bring the weapon along. I'd not actually considered the option of OCing before recently (I wasn't aware it was generally legal in WA before I started reading your blog), but I can think of situations I might do; out hiking, for example, but probably not in (sub)urban areas.

Sorry I was pretty tired last night and was just skimming through stuff...

Good deal your wife wants to learn the weapon as well, and I fully understand not having it around until she is comfortable with it...

Sure thing.
Basically, Wolf Haven is primarily a sanctuary for wolves from captive situations, such as private ownership (pets whom the owners had to give up or had confiscated), zoos (that had to close exhibits due to lack of funds), that sort of thing. These animals can't be released into the wild because they "socialized," that is, not sufficiently scared of humans. So instead, we try to provide them with an environment which approximates their natural habitat as closely as possible, in which they can live out the rest of their natural lives.

We don't have the space to keep them in packs, so we mostly have an alpha pair--one male, one female--to an enclosure (which are about a 1/2 acre each). The males receive a vasectomy and the females a hysterectomy, so that they can mate, but not breed. We don't want to add to the number of wolves in captivity, and frankly, we couldn't afford to take care of pups as well.

Check out the website as well.

So it is. It's about time; frankly, the site's looked like crap for the longest time, and there's been talk of getting a new web designed to give the thing a makeover for a while. Looks like it's finally happening.

Incidentally, have you ever checked out Northwest Trek? They have some wolves as well, and lots of other cool critters.

oh yeah, I've been to Northwest Trek, many times!  In fact looking at some of WolfHaven, I might have been there as well.  Can't really remember though.
