Open Carry RULES!

« on: August 27, 2007, 09:54:55 AM »

Guess I'll start this one off myself.  My wife and myself decided to finally try the "famed" Redmond Town Center Open Market.  It runs Saturdays.  We parked in the Center and followed the people filing towards the "Open Market".  We rounded a corner and my wife pulled me back and said "Look!".

She was pointing to a rather large sign that said.

"This is a NO Firearms area.  Helping to make our schools Safe".  Or something like that.  Just great.  They decide to put this Open Market about 20 feet from what I think is the Lake Washington School District offices?  Didn't actually see a school, but my wife went to the Redmond Town Center website and clicked on the building that sits right next to where the Open Market is, and it brings you right to the Lake Washington School District website.

Good thing she caught sight of the sign, it would have been a FELONY!

Carrying near the district offices makes it a felony how? Or is the market actually on district property?

Ok, fine, throw a penalty flag on me.   Grin

I found out that this is a "resource center", although there is no definition of what that means.  It is however, considered a "school zone".  Within 1000 feet of that is against federal law, correct?  The so called "gun free zone"?

I know the dirt lot is even within 100' of a school zone (I guess a "resource center" qualifies.)

Not to mention the RCW 9.41.280.  Which is a gross misdemeanor and automatic revocation of CPL for a period of 3 years.

That's quite interesting.  Perhaps the route I took required me to pass through the "school zone" (It was plainly marked with HUGE signs about it being a school zone and no firearms being permitted "for the safety of children".   Angry

I'll see if there is another route that can be taken to the market.

Just an FYI to everyone: The Federal GFSZA has an exemption for CPL holders.  Gregma, you are fine for travel there insofar as federal law goes.

Outstanding!  Now, what about state law.  I don't see anything in 9.41.280 about being so many feet from the school zone, so just so as long as the market isn't actually on the "school" property, and I don't *have* to cross the "school" property to get there, I should be fine, correct?

And another question.  9.41.280 doesn't make any distinction about what purpose a school building is for.  If it's administrative only, does it still fall into the "school zone" class?

Sounds right to me.  I'm pretty sure you can get to the market without having to cross the "school zone".  If so, then this would not qualify for our "do not patronize" list.  I'll update tomorrow.

If you are interested in going to the Saturday market (once a great farmers market now mostly a craft fare. I can go on a long rant here but...) All you need to do is park on the back side of the mall and you will not be anywhere near the district buildings.

You mean it's no longer a farmer's market?  That's what I was mainly interested in.   Sad

Same situation with the Edmonds Farmer's Market. Just a big crafts show with maybe 3-4 booths with actual produce and usually it's something like honey that isn't perishable. I really wish I could support local farming with some nice fresh fruits and veggies.

Don't get me wrong you can still get you local fresh veggies and all that it is just not what it was. It is still a decent farmers market, but when I was little it was a true farmers market and that is what I miss.
